Vintage Surfboard Auction to Be Held
Long boards, the dinosaurs of surfboard evolution, are making a comeback as collectibles.
That’s why some 500 long-board lovers from as far as Australia, South Africa and Europe have signed up to bid in Saturday’s second annual Danny Brawner Class Surfboard & ‘50s & ‘60s Memorabilia Auction.
Brawner, who worked for surfboard makers during the golden years of surfing, has collected and restored many of the 110 vintage boards that will be auctioned. Other boards are being sold on consignment.
In last year’s inaugural auction, 100 boards sold for more than $135,000.
In their heyday, the 10-foot long boards weighed 60 pounds and were made of balsa and redwood wrapped with fiberglass cloth.
The auction will be at the Twin Palms restaurant in Newport Beach from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A part of the event’s proceeds will benefit the Surfrider Foundation of Newport Beach. Information: (714) 675-8926.
