A homeless man was in stable condition Sunday night after he was attacked earlier in the day and his face was slashed with a knife.
Elliot Abbott, 43, told Ventura police officers that he was sleeping in bushes just off the Ventura Freeway at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Monmouth Way about 2:30 a.m. Sunday when a man jumped on his back.
The man demanded money from Abbott and then cut his face and neck with a knife, Abbott told police.
Abbott was able to run to a nearby mini-market, where the store clerk called 911. Abbott was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was being treated for his injury.
The assailant remained at large.
