The Santa Monica City Council has approved a one-year pilot program for pedicabs along Main Street.
The three-wheeled pedaled vehicles, which carry one operator and two passengers, are scheduled to begin operating next spring using existing bicycle paths along the cafe- and boutique-lined street.
“From an environmental perspective, pedicabs increase the mix of nonpolluting travel modes,” said Michael Feinstein.
If the program is deemed successful after a six-month evaluation, it may be expanded to other areas.
Elizabeth Noguez, owner of Tabu Floral Showroom on Ocean Avenue, said pedicab use would help promote areas of Santa Monica otherwise passed over by visitors flocking to the trendy areas of Third Street Promenade, Montana Avenue and Main Street.
