Thousands Muster for Civil War Fight
The Civil War’s bloodiest battle will be reenacted Sept. 12 to 14 in Maryland in what organizers say is one of the largest Civil War restagings ever.
As of last week about 9,400 people, including several hundred from California, had signed up to recreate the Battle of Antietam, which raged nearly 135 years ago on Sept. 17, 1862. The restaging will be near Hagerstown on the Artz Farm, about 10 miles north of the original site. Hagerstown-area hotels are mostly booked for the event, organizers say, but the site can be visited as a day trip from Baltimore or Washington, D.C. Daily tickets ($9 adults, $6 students) can be bought on site. Call toll-free (888) 248-4597.
The main battle reenactments are tentatively scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Sept. 13 and at 6 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14. The site will be open 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12 and 13 and 3:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14.
