Campbell Sued by Woman
Laker forward Elden Campbell is being sued by a woman who claims she was drugged and raped during a party at his home, it was reported.
The suit, filed in Torrance Superior Court by a 29-year-old Rosemead woman, alleges sexual battery, assault and false imprisonment, KNBC-TV reported Friday night.
Calls to a Laker spokesman seeking comment were not immediately returned Saturday.
The lawsuit, which also names Campbell’s cousin, Reginald Johnson, claims that the woman was attacked during an Aug. 30, 1996, party at Campbell’s home in Redondo Beach.
Police received conflicting statements about what happened and prosecutors declined to file criminal charges because of insufficient evidence, KNBC-TV said.
“For whatever reason the district attorney decided it was not a crime or there wasn’t a crime they could prove,†said Joe Hopkins, the woman’s attorney.
On July 3, 1995, Campbell was arrested for driving drunk after he crashed his car in Simi Valley. Johnson, of Los Angeles, was also in the car. Both suffered minor injuries.
