Hurricane Center Director Is Reassigned
WASHINGTON — The director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami is being reassigned because of health reasons, the National Weather Service announced Friday.
Robert W. Burpee will be transferred to a senior scientist position at the center, the agency said.
Burpee, head of the center that studies and predicts tropical storms since 1995, said he requested the change “to allow time for full recovery from continuing health concerns, most recently difficulties with my vision following cataract surgery.â€
Jerry Jarrell, deputy director of the center, will serve as acting director.
