The El Toro Reuse Planning Authority may hire an executive director to lead the group as it moves forward with a major study.

The group recently approved spending $1 million to study non-airport alternatives for the conversion of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

“Up until now, our group has been well managed by city staff volunteers,†said Chairman Richard Dixon, a Lake Forest councilman. “We just feel it is extremely important to have one individual devote full time to our efforts.â€

The group is made up of City Council representatives from six South County cities and Irvine. Staff members from those cities provide administrative support on a voluntary basis.

Staff members are expected to report on ways the group could fill the position at a Sept. 8 meeting. Cost estimates are not yet available.

Hiring options could include asking one of the city volunteers to take a leave of absence to run the planning authority. The group could also hire one of the consultants picked Monday for the non-aviation plan to assume the director’s duties.
