Troops Open Fire on Protest; Student Dies
One student died of gunshot wounds after soldiers opened fire on a campus protest in the capital, Kinshasa, witnesses said. At least three other students were seriously wounded at the National Institute of Teacher Training, and a fourth was suffering from trauma, Red Cross officials said. Police inspector Raus Chalwe blamed the students for the violence, saying they had thrown stones at two soldiers walking through the campus. Students have been at the forefront of protests by radical youths challenging Laurent Kabila, who led the seven-month rebellion that overthrew dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in May and then proclaimed himself president.
