Vigilante update--Mission Viejo, which pretty much has to win the South Division second-half title to make the playoffs and defend the Western Baseball League championships it has won in the last two years, is preparing to make its final run. Starting with the three-game series with Sonoma County, the Vigilantes will play their last 10 games against the Crushers and Salinas Peppers, the teams they have to overtake. Bret Barberie’s torrid hitting in August (29 for 66, .439) has raised his season average to .335 and placed him among the league’s top 10 batters.

Crusher update--After winning the first-half pennant, Sonoma County is trying to make a clean sweep of the South Division race. Entering play Wednesday night, the Crushers had a two-game lead over the Chico Heat with 11 to play. If the season ended today, Sonoma County would face Chico in the divisional playoffs; right now the Heat’s overall record is one better than Salinas. Last week the Crushers had five players named to the league’s all-star team--the most in club history and the most players from any one team. Manager Dick Deitz also was named WBL manager of the year.
