Christina Tolson of Cal State Northridge placed third in the women’s hammer throw at the USA Track & Field Junior championships at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday.
Tolson, the Northridge record-holder at 179-2, had a top mark of 171-9 to finish third behind Maureen Griffin of Pocatello (Idaho) High, who threw 177-7, and Glenna Wrenn of the U.S. Army, who threw 173-6.
The top two finishers in each event qualified for the U.S. team that will compete in the Pan American Junior championships in Havana on July 18-20.
Tolson was one of three Matador freshmen who competed Saturday.
The others were Brandi Prieto, 12th in the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided 38-6 1/4, and Cheree Hicks, 14th in the women’s discus at 143-6.
Hicks set four school records in the discus this season--topped by a throw of 180-2--and placed seventh in the NCAA championships. But she struggled after competition was delayed for two hours because of rain and lightning.
