Young Boy’s Critical Head Injuries Suspicious, Police Say
OXNARD — A 14-month-old Oxnard boy was clinging to life Friday evening at a Santa Barbara hospital after suffering what police called suspicious head injuries.
On Thursday, police officers went to a house in the 3800 block of San Simeon Avenue in Oxnard after a woman at the residence called authorities at 3 p.m. to report that the child she was baby-sitting had fallen and injured his head, Oxnard Police Det. Doug Wylie said.
The boy, identified by his uncle as Carlos Boronda, suffered a fractured skull and bruising to his face, Wylie said. The child underwent a craniotomy at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard in an effort to reduce brain swelling, authorities said.
Later that night the child was transferred to the pediatrics intensive care unit at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where a spokeswoman listed his condition as very critical.
Authorities said the injuries do not appear consistent with an accidental fall. On Friday night the unidentified baby-sitter was being questioned by police, Wylie said.
No arrests have been made.
