Santa Monica College announced this week that it will reopen its planetarium on June 13 after being closed for almost five years.

Renamed the John Drescher Planetarium, the facility has been technologically upgraded and can now show three-dimensional programs, said Bruce Smith, a spokesman for the college.

The planetarium’s first show, “From Quarks to Quasars,†will focus on everything from “the innermost heart of the atom to the distant galaxies and quasars of our far-flung universe,†said planetarium Director Jonathon Hodge.

The 50-seat planetarium closed in July 1992 for remodeling and remained shut down after incurring damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Located at 1900 Pico Blvd., the planetarium will show “From Quarks to Quasars†at 8 p.m. on June 13 and 20, and July 11 and 18. Tickets are $4. For more information call (310) 452-9223.
