A Marine who was part of a team watching a suspected drug trafficking route along the Mexican border shot and killed a high-school student from Redford, Texas. The Texas Rangers were investigating, and military border activities in the area about 200 miles southeast of El Paso were suspended. Ezequiel Hernandez Jr., 18, was shot Tuesday after opening fire on four Marines, the U.S. Border Patrol said. A Marine spokesman said Hernandez fired twice and was getting ready to fire a third time when he was killed. But relatives said Hernandez was just walking with his goats in search of better grazing about half a mile from the family’s home. They said he sometimes would target shoot. Military and Border Patrol officials expressed condolences but said they were puzzled by Hernandez’s actions. An immigrant rights group said the military should not be used to police the border.
