Using Tiger Woods’ recent success as inspiration, Burley Stamps of Palisades High gave African American golfers another boost on Tuesday when he won the City Section individual title at Wilson Golf Course in Griffith Park.
Stamps, a junior, shot consecutive rounds of 73 and won by seven strokes over Todd Golditch and Jeff Lawler, both of Chatsworth.
Birmingham High Coach Chick Epstein, a 30-year coaching veteran in City Section Golf, could not remember any African American champions in the section.
“This is real important,” Stamps said. “I’m following in Tiger’s footsteps and now hopefully some other kids will follow in mine.”
Chatsworth won the team title, ending Granda Hills’ four-year run.
