Thousands Protest Rent Decontrol Plan

More than 8,000 people rallied at the state Capitol in Albany, protesting threatened changes in rent control laws in New York City. The laws limit how much landlords can charge for about 1.2 million apartments. The laws affect 2.7 million tenants, many of whom worry that decontrol will lead to higher rents. Protesters also opposed a plan to keep the laws intact for current residents but permit market-rate rents once a tenant moves or dies.
