Foreign-Owned Firms Election Funding Told

WASHINGTON — Subsidiaries of foreign companies contributed more than $12 million toward last year’s election campaigns, a study found. Legitimate subsidiaries of foreign corporations can legally donate millions of dollars earned in the United States.
In 1995 and 1996, foreign-owned subsidiaries gave at least $8.4 million to Republicans and $4.1 million to Democrats, said the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
Joseph E. Seagram & Sons led the list, contributing $1.6 million, with $892,750 flowing to the Democrats, the study found.
