Plans Underway for New Athletic Fields
Plans are underway to build athletic fields and courts on 18 acres at the new McPherson magnet school to serve 4,000 children in four sports clubs.
The $2.5-million plan will go before the school board and City Council in June. Designs call for four full-size soccer fields, five baseball diamonds, two concession and restroom buildings, a parking lot, a “hardscape†for basketball and volleyball, a tot lot, a picnic area, and new turf and irrigation.
The city would pay for the renovation with money acquired through the sale of surplus land. City Council members, who approved the concept last week, said that creating all the playing fields would help preserve the site as badly needed open space.
The plan also would help the South Sunrise Little League, which includes 500 children who now play on inadequate fields at Yorba Park.
Other beneficiaries would be the Orange Soccer Club, the Lancers and the Orange Junior Soccer Club, which together have 3,500 members.
The school district would lose its track and tennis courts but gain volleyball and basketball courts, according to design plans.
