Chevalier Will Take Leave at Thousand Oaks

Thousand Oaks boys’ basketball Coach Ed Chevalier has been granted a leave of absence from coaching next season.

Chevalier, who has been the varsity coach for the past 17 seasons, will be replaced by assistant Richard Endres. Endres has coached the junior varsity and assisted Chevalier for seven seasons.

Under Chevalier, Thousand Oaks won four Marmonte League titles and reached the Southern Section playoffs 15 times.

The Lancers failed to make the playoffs the past two years and finished last in the Marmonte League in 1997.

Signed, sealed: Valley College sophomore Virgie Juarez has signed to play basketball at Minot State in North Dakota.

Juarez, a 5-foot-8 point guard, averaged 9.5 assists for the Monarchs last season, second in the Western State Conference.

She was an honorable mention all-conference selection and helped Valley to a 50-21 record in two seasons.

Heavy hitter: Former Alemany High standout Andy Dominique was named player of the year in the Big West Conference.

Dominique, who plays third base for Nevada, hit .352 with a league-high 26 home runs and 87 runs batted in.

Honorable: Cal State Northridge senior catcher Jennifer Parker this week was named Big West Conference softball field player of the year and was selected to the All-West Region team.

Parker won the Big West batting title at .399 and had 34 RBIs.

Parker, the school’s female athlete of the year, had 63 hits in the regular season, 18 more than any other player.

Double-team: Northridge first baseman Chelo Lopez was named to the All-Big West softball team and the All-West Region second team.
