City Council members have pledged to monitor the planned renovation of the Continental Gardens Apartments after hearing residents’ concerns that their rents might be raised or that they might face eviction.
The city will lend the proceeds from a $14.3-million bond sale to Bertram Development Partners of Laguna Hills for a make-over of the complex. Company officials said that all of the building’s 298 units will be priced for low-income renters.
Mayor Brian Donahue said that tenants will not be evicted during the renovations and that the city will not allow rents to “skyrocket.” Councilman David John Shawver said he will personally review concerns of tenants and meet with them again.
