TIMES STAFF WRITER

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County has announced three additional short series for its 1997-98 season.

An eclectic series will open Oct. 6 with “Umabatha: Zulu Macbeth,” a recent dance theater work by African playwright Welcome Msomi that mirrors the story of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” “Umabatha” will take place at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Completing this series will be the Irish group Altan on March 22 and Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar on May 14. Both Altan and Shankar, who sold out previous concerts on the society’s series, will appear at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.

A chamber orchestra series of concerts, all at the Irvine theater, will open Oct. 7 with the Hilliard Ensemble with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir led by Tonu Kaljuste. The series also will include concerts by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Pacific Chorale, led by chorale director John Alexander, on Dec. 4, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra led by Jeffrey Kahane on Jan. 29.
