Premiers of Pakistan, India Meet Amicably

The leaders of India and Pakistan faced each other for the first time in four years and agreed on measures to ease tensions between their long-feuding countries. The convivial tone shared by prime ministers Inder Kumar Gujral of India and Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan spurred optimism that the half century of hostility can be resolved. Among other things, they agreed to set up a hot line, arranged a release of prisoners and decided to create committees to discuss the issues that have led them to war three times since 1947.
