Police Arrest Man After Shots Fired

A 67-year-old Oxnard man was in Ventura County Jail on Monday on suspicion of firing a handgun while standing on his front porch in a drunken stupor the night before, police said.

Floyd Homer Childers allegedly fired a .22-caliber handgun from his porch about 11 p.m. Sunday while Oxnard officers watched, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to the “shots fired” call and set up a perimeter around Childers’ house in the 2300 block of East Ventura Boulevard, the spokesman said.

As they were watching his home, Childers stepped onto his front porch and fired a shot in the direction of the Ventura Freeway, officials said.

Over the next few minutes, police observed Childers staggering in and out of his home, setting off a large firecracker, and then firing his weapon in the general direction of police, the spokesman said.

Police contacted Childers by phone and persuaded him to give himself up peacefully.

He was arrested under suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm with gross negligence, a Ventura County Jail spokeswoman said. His bail was set at $20,000.
