Contest Proposed for Naming New School

For months, Moorpark residents have been coming up with their own names for the elementary school planned for downtown.

North Hills School. Casey Road School. That school where the old high school used to be.

Now school district trustee Clint Harper wants folks to do it for real.

Harper wants to hold a citywide contest to name the school, which will be built on the site of Moorpark’s former high school on Casey Road. He will pitch the idea at tonight’s school board meeting.

Harper noted that the idea worked for the city when it wanted to name its largest park. City officials staged a competition, in which Harper submitted the name Arroyo Vista.

“We held a contest, and I won,” he said.

At the meeting, district Supt. Tom Duffy will also present trustees with a list of possible names that will be drawn up by the board’s building committee.

Trustee Gary Cabriales, who serves on the committee, said he would spend the weekend trying to brainstorm possibilities.

“There’s nothing I have my heart set on,” he said.
