Man, Woman Burned in Fighting Garage Fire

A man and a woman were burned during a garage fire that singed a truck and caused damage estimated at $2,000, firefighters said Monday.

Flames erupted about 10 p.m. Sunday in the 9100 block of Browning Street and consumed the clothes of a 30-year-old man who suffered second- and third-degree burns on his back and legs, a city Fire Department spokesman said.

The man’s mother, who was trying to help him put out the fire, suffered burns on her hands, Battalion Chief Chuck Burney said.

Fourteen firefighters battled the blaze, which was confined to the garage.

“It was a gasoline fire,” Burney said. “The gas had spilled from a fuel tank and was ignited by an electrical short in an extension cord in the garage.”

Both burn victims were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange. The man was in intensive care Monday, and his mother was “doing good,” Burney said.

The victims were not identified.
