$37-Million Check
The article about the lost check for $37.6 million (May 2) was quite revealing. Apparently, the state does not transmit money electronically in all situations, although electronic transmission is used to pay state retirees and the federal government pays Social Security benefits in the same manner.
An incorrect address appears to have been the culprit. It was enlightening to note that the lost interest, approximately $35,000 for a week at 5%, was considered of no consequence. Not a princely sum, but it would pay someone’s salary for a year. It is unbelievable that the state with the most advanced technology is so backward in its use.
