Program Seeks Mentors for Needy Youth

The YMCA and Families-Costa Mesa, an umbrella organization for a network of charities, churches and schools that works to improve conditions for low-income youth, need mentors to spend time with underprivileged children.

Volunteers are paired with youngsters and teens whose parents often work several jobs and have little time to spend with their families. The mentors serve as role models, teachers and friends.

Activities, largely up to the mentor, include helping the children with homework, taking them to the beach, in-line skating and playing catch.

The 4-year-old program has about three dozen 34 mentors working with area children. Both men and women are welcome to apply, but there is a serious demand for more men, said Dorothy Castillo, mentor coordinator at the YMCA.

A meeting for people interested in mentoring will take place from 6:15 to 8 p.m. May 15 at the Downtown Community Center, 1860 Anaheim Ave.
