Woodbridge Beats Santa Margarita to Win Title

Woodbridge High, the top-ranked team in Orange County, beat No. 5 Santa Margarita, 12-6, to clinch the Sea View League boys’ tennis title Thursday at Santa Margarita.

Woodbridge got only one sweep in the match and that came from Brandon Shainfeld and Greg Levy at No. 1 doubles. The pair won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, for Woodbridge (18-0, 8-0).

Andrew Tsu swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, for Santa Margarita (15-3, 5-3).

Woodbridge had won the earlier meeting between the teams, 15-3.

In other Sea View League matches:

Irvine 12, Newport Harbor 6--Jaideep Dore swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, for Irvine (9-9, 2-6).

Corona del Mar 14, El Toro 4--The doubles team of Greg Coleman and Sameer Chopra won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for Corona del Mar (11-6, 6-2).

In the Century League:

Canyon 9, Villa Park 9 (Canyon wins on games, 75-57)--The doubles team of Rob Saggu and David Douglas swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and the doubles team of Luke Fowler and Parag Bhatt won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for Canyon (9-7, 7-1).

Foothill 14, Orange 4--David Jerney swept his singles sets, 6-1, 7-5, 6-3, for Foothill (11-5, 7-1).

El Modena 17, Santa Ana Valley 1--Brian Church swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, for El Modena (10-6, 4-3). Jason Topar also swept for El Modena, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 19 1/2, Century 1 1/2--Nikhil Daga swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, for Cypress (12-4, 6-2). Josh Cruz also swept for Cypress, 6-0, 6-2.

Daga and Cruz also won in doubles, 6-4.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 15, Los Amigos 3--Robert Chu swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead La Quinta (7-5, 7-3).

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 18, Ocean View 8--Thong Phan swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, for Saddleback (11-5, 8-2).

Servite 16, Westminster 2--Michael Melby and Brock Heimann swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, as Servite won its third consecutive league title. Servite (18-2, 10-0) is 29-1 in the Golden West League over the past three seasons.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 14, Troy 4--John Choi and Davin Lin swept their doubles sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, for Sunny Hills (11-3, 8-0).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 13, San Clemente 5--Dan Nguyen and Brent Shoji won in doubles, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1, for Mission Viejo (10-7, 5-2).

Capistrano Valley 11, Trabuco Hills 7--Scott Merryman improved his singles record to 40-5 with 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 victories for Capistrano Valley (13-3, 5-2).

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 18, Edison 6--Ninth-ranked Los Alamitos lost only 29 games in 12 singles sets. Cody Jackson and Bryan Geddes won their singles sets, then teamed for a 6-3 victory in doubles for the Griffins (14-1, 8-0).
