It’s a First-Rate Showing by Van Nuys
Gregg Choe and Vincent Hsu each swept four sets and Van Nuys High routed Cleveland, 23 1/2-6, in the first round of the City Section 3-A Division boys’ tennis playoffs Wednesday at Van Nuys.
Choe won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, and Hsu posted victories of 6-4, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams of Bradley Herman and Peter Kung, and Glendon Woo and Ming Lo recorded sweeps over three opponents for the Wolves (13-1).
Monroe 26, Belmont 3 1/2--Nos. 1 and 2 singles players Mark Ranches and Robbie Parras each swept four singles sets and the eighth-seeded Vikings (11-3) won 14 of 16 singles sets in a City 3-A playoff victory over Belmont at Monroe.
Westlake 15, Camarillo 3--The Warriors continued to run away with the Marmonte League title in a match at the North Ranch Tennis Club. Darren Joe and Alex Yaftali swept at Nos. 1 and 3 singles for Westlake (15-0, 11-0 in league play).
El Camino Real 28 1/2, Venice 1--Brothers Manish and Bobby Narayan set the tone for the Conquistadores (9-4) by sweeping at Nos. 1 and 2 singles in the first round of the City 4-A tournament at El Camino Real.
Simi Valley 18, Channel Islands 0--Garret Wilkinson and Ryan Otto were 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 victors at No. 3 doubles in their varsity debut for the Pioneers (12-5, 6-5) in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.
Agoura 11, Thousand Oaks 7--The Chargers (6-8, 5-6) dropped six of nine sets in singles but dominated the Lancers (9-6, 8-3) in doubles in a Marmonte League match.
Royal 10, Newbury Park 8--Alex Jensen swept three sets at No. 2 singles for the Highlanders (7-10, 3-8) in a Marmonte League match.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Highland d. Littlerock, 13-15, 5-15, 15-8, 15-1, 15-12--Tom Haight had 30 kills, 16 digs and 11 blocks, and the Bulldogs (10-1, 7-0) rallied from an 8-1 deficit in the fifth game.
Kennedy d. Cleveland, 15-3, 15-7, 15-6--Jeff Toon had 19 kills for the Golden Cougars (8-5, 5-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.
