Kansas City’s Preki Is Key to Opening Win in Shootout

Preki scored in both regulation and the shootout Saturday night, enabling the Wizards to win their Major League Soccer season opener, 3-2, over the San Jose Clash at Kansas City, Mo.

Eric Wynalda scored both goals for the Clash, which also lost in a shootout in its season opener.

Paul Wright, Mark Chung and Frank Klopas also scored in the shootout for Kansas City.

Mo Johnston’s free kick curved in from just outside the penalty box in the 13th minute put Kansas City ahead, but Wynalda tied the score five minutes into the second half.

Preki scored three minutes later off a pass from Digital Takawira. Wynalda then converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute to again tie the score.

The game drew a crowd of 10,196.

New England 1, Dallas 0--An own goal by Eric Dade in the 38th minute gave the Revolution a victory in its season opener before 11,063 at the Cotton Bowl.

The goal evolved from a hard 18-yard shot by Ted Chronopoulos. The kick deflected off charging goalkeeper Mark Dodd, caromed off Dade and into the net.

New England’s Walter Zenga, the goalkeeper for Italy in the 1990 World Cup, denied Jason Kreis on a free kick in 81st minute and blocked Gerell Elliott’s shot off the rebound. Zenga, a former Internationale of Milan standout who is now 37, had three saves. Dodd had eight.

Tampa Bay 2, New York/New Jersey 1--Two goals by Italian League veteran Giuseppe Galderisi, including one in the final 37 seconds, were the difference at Tampa Bay.

Galderisi, who played for Italy’s 1986 World Cup team, side-winded in a perfect corner kick past goalie Tony Meola to give Tampa a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

The winner came when Ivan McKinley, sandwiched by two defenders, passed to Galderisi in the goal mouth.

It was the season opener for the Mutiny, and the second consecutive loss by the MetroStars.

The Mutiny played without last year’s MLS most valuable player Carlos Valderrama, who was serving a suspension.
