Oliphant Cartoon
The political cartoon (March 14, Commentary) is clearly offensive to African Americans and all sensible Americans. Why have Pat Oliphant and your editorial staff deemed it appropriate to portray an African American male as dressed shabbily, wearing a backward baseball cap and speaking poor English and slang? He is one of six characters and is irrelevant to the cartoon’s political message. Yet efforts were made for him to stand out.
The real comment on the Commentary page is that accurate images of African Americans are of little concern to the cartoonists or to your staff.
