Moorpark Reaches Final Eight

Trisha Palmquist had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Moorpark College women’s basketball team in an 87-85 overtime victory over Mt. San Antonio in a Southern California Regional third-round game Friday night at Mt. SAC.

The Raiders (20-11) advanced to the eight-team state championships next week at San Jose.

Corey Phillips scored 17 points for Moorpark and Melissa Shogen had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Alellie Espiritu led Mt. SAC (17-12) with 19 points.

BASEBALL

CS Northridge 11, Loyola Marymount 9--The Matadors were fueled by 15 hits, including three home runs, in a nonconference game at Northridge.

It marked the second day in a row the Matadors (17-8-1) beat the Lions (7-14).

Adam Kennedy had four hits, including a double and his 16th home run, and drove in three runs for Northridge. Casey Cheshier and Brian Wagner each hit their sixth homers.

Third baseman Chris MacMillan singled twice, the second day in a row he has contributed since gaining eligibility on Thursday. MacMillan, a junior transfer, hit a two-run double in Thursday’s 5-4 win.

Jose Miranda doubled, singled and drove in two runs. Erasmo Ramirez (5-1) allowed four earned runs in six innings for Northridge.

Matt Riordan, a freshman from Westlake High, had three hits for Loyola Marymount.

Cal Lutheran 2, Claremont-Mudd 0--Anthony Olden hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont-Mudd.

Richard Bell pitched a complete game for the Kingsmen (13-3, 10-0) and had 11 strikeouts, including the last six batters.

WOMEN’S TRACK

NCAA Indoor Championships--Beth Burton of Cal State Northridge finished sixth in the 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 60 feet 10 inches in the meet at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.

Burton, eighth in last year’s meet, earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year by finishing among the top eight, but her distance was well short of the school record (67-0 3/4) she set in winning the Big Sky Conference title on Feb. 22.

Dawn Ellerbe of South Carolina won her second consecutive title with a throw of 71-8.
