Amida Boussou and Hassan Hakmoun, masters of Moroccan Gnawa music, perform at the Ash Grove in Santa Monica on Sunday at 4 and 8 p.m.
This rare performance of the traditional, trance-inducing music brings together Boussou, the teacher, and his student, Hakmoun. The performance will include the use of the sentir, a lute-like instrument; the qarqaba, sheet-iron cymbals played in castanet fashion; and the tbola, large dark-toned drums.
The performance is the first in a new Ash Grove booking policy that will bring a wide variety of world music acts to the venue.
