Nine-Game Winning Streak Is Over for Thousand Oaks
The Thousand Oaks girls’ basketball team had its nine-game winning streak snapped Saturday nightin a 58-46 defeat to Cerritos Valley Christian, the five-time defending Southern Section Division IV-A champion, in a nonleague game at Thousand Oaks.
Jenn Detmer of Thousand Oaks, who was averaging 20 points, was held to four points. Amy Haslam had eight points for the Lancers and Katie Stanulis had seven.
Sarah Middlebrooke had 15 points for the Cerritos Valley Christian (21-2).
In another girls’ game:
Cornerstone Christian 63, Villanova Prep 32--Julia Tamai had 18 points--including four three-point baskets--14 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals for the Eagles (17-2, 8-0) in a Condor League game at Villanova Prep (4-8, 2-4).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
L.A. Baptist 72, Kilpatrick 55--The No. 9-ranked Knights (20-2, 9-1) did not trail as they rebounded from Thursday night’s 62-51 loss to Marshall, their first loss in 12 games.
Aaron Davis had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Dave Plaxen added 15 points to pace the Knights. Jermaine Sweet, who averages 25.4 points, scored a season-low six points after being moved to point guard. He also had five assists.
Campbell Hall 42, Pacific Hills 34--Josh Glass scored 15 points and Brandon Woodard had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Campbell Hall (12-10, 5-3) in a Delphic League game at Campbell Hall.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
San Marcos 4, Oxnard 2--Henory Manriquez and Natalia Camacho each scored and goalkeeper Nadine Rangeo had nine saves, but the Yellowjackets (3-9-3, 1-8-3) fell in a Channel League match at Oxnard.
WRESTLING
Golden League finals--Highland wrestlers won titles in eight weight classes and finished second in five others at Antelope Valley High.
Al Samson of Highland pinned Victor Goytia of Antelope Valley in an upset at 103 pounds, and John Garfinkel of Highland won the 125-pound title with a 9-2 decision over Devon Zemp of Palmdale.
Wrestlers who finished first or second advance to the Southern Section tournament Feb. 21-22.
Mission League finals--Jeff Jaeger and Patrick Anderson of host Harvard-Westlake, Alex Herrera and Danny De Pasquale of Alemany, and Sean Kessel and John Goss of Chaminade advanced to the Southern Section tournament.
Jaeger defeated Bishop Amat’s Luigi Rao, 5-2, to win the 171-pound title. Goss won the 215-pound final by default over Bishop Amat’s Richard Esparsa, who suffered an injured shoulder.
Anderson lost, 16-9, to St. John Bosco’s A.J. Translavania for a runner-up finish in the 140 pound final. Goss’ Chaminade teammate, Kessel, was runner-up at 145 pounds after he dropped a 10-5 decision to Theo West of Bishop Montgomery.
For Alemany, Herrera advanced to the final at 130 pounds before falling to Bishop Montgomery’s Roland Andrade, 8-5, and De Pasquale lost by decision to Bishop Amat’s Zeno Hessing in the heavyweight division.
In team competition, Alemany scored 87 points to finish fourth behind Bishop Amat (229), St. John Bosco (178 1/2) and Bishop Montgomery (129). Harvard-Westlake finished in fifth place with 63 points and Chaminade was sixth with 56 points.
Channel League finals--Ventura set a league record by placing wrestlers in 13 of the 14 finals and winning in nine weight divisions.
Cougar Christobal Gonzalez (33-0) defeated Pat Compton of Dos Pueblos, 11-6, in the final of the 189-pound class. Rio Mesa’s Jessie Bautista beat Ventura’s Dustin Clocherty, 7-4, in the 130-pound final.
The only top-seeded wrestler not to win was heavyweight Ricky Mendez of Hueneme, who lost to Paul Almanza of Rio Mesa in the semifinals. Ventura’s Joe Locklear beat Almanza, 9-4, in the final.
Ventura, ranked No. 2 in Division I, qualified the entire team for the Southern Section tournament.
