Sanchez Wins Spot on House’s Influential Security Committee

WASHINGTON — Rep. Loretta Sanchez on Wednesday won a spot on the House National Security Committee, giving her a prime look at defense spending and base closures.
“It was a very coveted spot,” said the Garden Grove Democrat following her appointment. “But we requested it and we got it.”
The first-term congresswoman said there are many ways in which her district can benefit from having a voice on the panel. She said she plans to work with military base closures and conversions in her area, especially the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and Tustin Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station.
Robert K. Dornan, the Republican Sanchez unseated in November, also served on the committee.
Dornan frequently made national headlines with controversial legislation he sponsored on the panel, including a measure to dismiss all HIV-positive military personnel and another to ban the sale of pornography on bases.
The proposal relating to HIV-positive personnel eventually was dropped by the House leadership and the pornography ban was ruled unconstitutional.
