Home Depot Seeks OK to Open Branch

A Home Depot branch may open in town if the City Council grants the retailer permission to move to 40 acres of vacant land near the Riverside Freeway. A hearing on the issue is on the agenda for tonight’s council session.
Councilwoman Barbara Kiley said city officials estimate the store would generate as much as $800,000 a year in sales tax revenue to the city.
The land, known as the Savi Ranch, was once chosen by the city as the site of an auto mall. Those plans were canceled a decade ago after residents protested that the concentration of car dealerships would be noisy and unsightly.
Since then, city officials have struggled to attract businesses that would bring money into the city without upsetting the community, but have not yet succeeded in doing so.
The council will seek public comment on Home Depot’s request at its 6:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 4845 Casa Loma Ave. Information: (714) 961-7100.
