‘Family’ Definition

Re David Wilson’s Jan. 30 letter about lesbian custody battles: Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition, defines the word “family” as “the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their own or adopted children: also: any of various social units differing from but regarded as equivalent to the traditional family. . . .” No wonder I have never cared for the American Heritage dictionary.
