Vaughn Provides the Offense as 49ers Defeat Fresno State

Leadoff batter Lateef Vaughn had a double and two runs scored in Long Beach State’s 6-3 victory over Fresno State on Saturday at Beiden Field.
Rocky Biddle (1-0) posted his first win of the season for Long Beach State (1-1), pitching five complete innings with six hits, three strikeouts, four walks, and three earned runs. Iran Barrera picked up the save. Fresno State is 1-1.
In nonconference basketball:
Chapman 80, Menlo College 58--Greg Evans scored 19 points to lead Chapman. Toby Curto scored 16 for Chapman.
In nonconference softball:
Chapman 4-3, Cal Baptist 2-0--Chapman freshman Brittany Carlson pitched a one-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader. Anna Haluschak had two hits in the game for Chapman (2-0).
Heather Peters had three hits and two RBIs in the second game for the Panthers. Teammate Jessamine Maiben had a double and a triple.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
Southern California College 5, UC San Diego 2--Paulo Barriga and Matt O’Sullivan each won in straight sets in singles for SCC. Barriga and O’Sullivan also teamed up for a doubles victory, 8-2.
In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:
Long Beach State 3, USC 0--Ed Ratledge had 22 kills and Geoff Cryst had 18 to lead Long Beach State (6-1, 1-1), which defeated USC (8-5, 1-1), 15-6, 15-9, 15-3. Chris Seiffert had 57 assists for the 49ers.
UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 1--Chris Harger had 25 kills and Mike Rupp had 19 for UC Irvine (0-4, 0-2), which lost, 6-15, 15-7, 7-15, 14-16. Kevin Dake had 73 assists for the Anteaters.
