Trial of Genocide Suspect Begins

Rwanda’s most anticipated war crimes trial yet opened in Kigali, where former politician Froduald Karamira is accused of inciting the murders of half a million of his own people. Karamira, who was born a Tutsi but became a Hutu, is charged with crimes against humanity, murder and attempted murder in the 1994 killing spree. Witnesses testified that Karamira regularly went on the radio to advocate the slaughter of Tutsis. Karamira has pleaded innocent.
