MTA’s Blue Line
The Jan. 13 editorial on the future of the MTA and its rail projects stated that the Pasadena Blue Line appears headed for a budget overrun. This is not the case. The Blue Line will probably come in under budget when it goes into service in 2001. The plain fact is, the corridor communities, working with the MTA, have lowered the previous Blue Line budget by $200 million.
The only way the Blue Line will go over budget would be if the MTA does not meet its 2001 opening commitment. A delayed opening would result in cost overruns due to additional financing and construction costs. Working with the MTA, the city of Pasadena and the corridor communities have proposed solutions to the MTA Blue Line cash-flow problem. Keeping the project on time will keep it on budget--and provide Los Angeles County mass transit users a vital link in our regional transportation system.
