Bookstores Transform Into Activity Centers

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A competitive market has required the bookstore to shed its hushed atmosphere, where customers browsed quietly with nary a cappuccino machine or audio book in sight.

The local establishment, whether a chain or an independent, is now an activity center.

Customers are bustling between authors autographing and cooks demonstrating. They come with the kids to hear storytellers and with the spouse to attend slide shows, lectures and musical events.

And to sustain themselves between cultural activities, they stop at the in-store cafe and have a bite to eat and a chat with friends or colleagues.
