Tredway’s Two Goals Enough for Los Alamitos
With two minutes remaining in overtime, Cyndi Tredway lobbed a shot over defenders and dropped it into the corner of the goal to give Los Alamitos a 2-1 victory over Marina in Sunset League girls’ soccer Thursday.
Tredway, a senior forward converted from all-league defender this season, scored both goals, preserving Los Alamitos’ No. 4 ranking and helping the Griffins improve to 13-3-2, 3-0.
“[Tredway] is a shark,” Los Alamitos Coach Rich Manning said. “She goes out hunting and attacks the goal. She loves to shoot, that’s why I moved her position this season.”
Tredway gave Los Alamitos a 1-0 lead when she took a crossing pass from teammate Niki Szlak and angled into the corner past Marina goalkeeper Melissa Ullrich, 22 minutes into the game.
The second half was dominated by Marina (9-5-1, 2-1). The Vikings controlled the ball for most of the half and outshot the Griffins, 9-4. With numerous opportunities to score, Marina was finally able to sneak one by goalkeeper Jenny Willemse with 10 minutes left in the game when Megan Orach centered a pass to Aimee Knudson, who drilled it into the goal to tie the score at 1-1.
Willemse, another Manning conversion, who he says is Los Alamitos’ “best-kept secret,” moved into the goal from the forward position and has played fewer than 30 games in the net. Thursday she was outstanding for the Griffins, making two crucial fingertip saves in the second half to help keep the score close.
