Gov. Wilson on Adoption
Gov. Pete Wilson has hit an all-time low urging poor mothers to offer their babies up for adoption (Jan. 10). Adoption is an option for some no matter where they fit on our economic ladder; however, it is not an option for many people regardless of living above or below the poverty line. Our misguided governor seems to think that what children need is money and a non-risky environment (whatever that may mean).
I have my first child due any day. I’m glad that I live in a middle-class neighborhood, have a nice cradle, crib, clothes and digital thermometer ready for my baby. I’m even more pleased that my wife and I are excited and full of love we are ready to give to our child. I hope we can teach our child good values, be consistent, let him or her know the importance of an education, work on having good communication and make sure this baby grows up surrounded by love. Maybe Wilson thinks if you lack money you’re not bright enough to have strong values to share or love to give.
If parenthood was only for the wealthy, there would be too many children growing up with parents who are fools like Wilson.

* Californians spared no expense and effort trying to reunite a baby whale with its mother (Jan. 11). At the same time, our governor asked all poor mothers to “voluntarily†relinquish their children for adoption.
What will Wilson do when supply of $20,000-$50,000 adoptables exceeds local market as in Romania? Export?
