Obituaries : Joseph H. Waring; Plaza Usher, Hospital Volunteer
Joseph H. Waring, a popular usher at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, died Tuesday after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 71.
The longtime Thousand Oaks resident had worked as an usher at the center for two years. He had become so popular with patrons that people would ask about him when he didn’t show up, said Mary Ann Tachco, the theater’s operations supervisor.
“He totally committed the last years of his life to the Civic Arts Plaza and providing our patrons with the most enjoyable live arts experience possible,†Tachco said.
Waring was a member of the Screen Actors Guild for more than 50 years and acted with Doris Day in “Jumbo,†a Billy Rose film.
In addition to his work at the arts plaza, Waring volunteered at Columbia Los Robles Hospital.
“He was a very giving man,†said John Myrter, a volunteer coordinator at the Thousand Oaks hospital. “He devoted a lot of time here. He had spent his retirement years in community service.â€
He is survived by a sister, Shirley Gerzoff of New Jersey.
No services are scheduled.
