Former Academy Cadet Is Given New Court Date
Standing at attention in his jail blues, a former cadet with the Ventura County Police and Sheriff’s Reserve Academy waived his right to a speedy arraignment Tuesday, allowing prosecutors two days to decide whether he should be charged with offering to kill another cadet’s wife.
Prosecutor Miles Weiss said he still needed to review the case against Anthony Lamug Castillo, 27, of Oxnard, who was arrested Friday night, the eve of the academy graduation.
Graduates of the reserve academy are eligible to serve as non-paid reserve offers on a part-time basis with both the Sheriff’s Department and local police departments.
Castillo’s attorney, Barry Bernstein of Century City, would not comment on the case, saying he has not yet reviewed the allegations against his client.
Castillo is now set to be arraigned Thursday morning.
