GOLDEN WEST LEAGUE

Ocean View: 23-9, 9-1 in 1995-96. Coach: Bill Seibert (first year). Prospects: Seibert, an assistant in the past, takes over for Ollie Martin (11 years, 186-87). Ocean View, one of the county’s best teams, is easily the league favorite despite the graduation of Becky Fraser (15 points, 8.4 rebounds). The Seahawks were beaten in last year’s Division II-A final and regional semifinals by Brea Olinda. Guard Jennifer Tuiolosega and center Anna Lembke are the floor leaders. Tuiolosega (5-8), one of the county’s premier players as a sophomore but slowed by a knee injury last year, averaged 14.6 points and four assists; she shot 33.1% from the three-point line, and 78.6% from the free-throw line (fourth in the county). Lembke (6-1), a junior, led the county in field-goal percentage (68%, 157 of 231), shot 63.7% from the free-throw line and averaged 11.8 points; she averaged 7.5 rebounds. Ocean View also has other decent players who should have no problem producing on the floor, junior forwards Vickie and Rebecca Beelner (5-8), senior forward Jasmine Rozales (5-9), senior guard Kammi Konishi (5-3) and sophomore guard Tracy Lindquist (5-6).

Rosary: 12-13, 6-4 in 1995-96. Coach: Rich Yoon (third year, 28-19). Prospects: The Royals have three returning starters on a team that went into last year’s playoffs as the Division III-A dark horse. However, they were beaten in the first round by Estancia, 64-52. Forward Sarah Cody (5-10, 10 points, six rebounds), center Marissa Perez (six points, 9.4 rebounds) and junior guard Sarah Belavic (6.2 assists, sixth-best in county) provide experience, and guards Jennifer Kanne (six points) and Lauren Osajima (30% three-point shooter) make nice additions to the mix. Osajima’s shooting could prove especially fruitful on a team that lacks height but has a strong transition game.

Saddleback: 2-19, 1-9 in 1995-96. Coach: Adriel Esparza (first year). Prospects: Starters Toni Ibarra (8 points, 8 rebounds) and junior Deana Guzman are back, but the rest are freshmen and sophomores. Quick but inexperienced, the team will build for next season and depend on sophomores Myra Toscano (forward, 5-10) and Prabjot Kaur (point guard), up from a junior varsity team that went 15-6 under Esparza.

Santa Ana: 5-20, 1-9 in 1995-96. Coach: Roman Reyna (first year). Prospects: Starting senior guard Carol Gonzalez (5-4) returns, but she provides the only real experience on the team. Only one player, junior Kristina Guillen (5-11), is taller than 5-8. Reyna says they play strong defense and shoot free-throws well. Every little bit will help.

Tustin: 12-15, 4-6 in 1995-96. Coach: Steve Dunmeyer (first year). Prospects: Rick Falk, who had a 169-104 record over 12 years, was a co-coach last year and is an assistant to Dunmeyer this year. Guard Shamekia Perkins (5-5), who averaged 14.4 points, leads four starters who return, guard Chantelle Simoes (4.3 assists), forward Alison Brown (5-11, four points) and sophomore center Brook Brown (6-0, 7.3 rebounds). There’s also good size on the bench from Sarah Smith (5-10), Annie Carr (5-11) and sophomore Jessie Cooper (6-0).

Westminster: 23-5, 9-1 in 1995-96. Coach: Dick Katz (13th year, 119-187). Prospects: The Lions shared their first league title and had a school-record 23 victories, but they lost all their starters to graduation. The top four returning players averaged fewer than 14 points between them, and all-league forward Erin Moore (5-11) averaged 7.3--along with three rebounds. The others are guards Jessica Johnson and Tara Moore, and center Janet Glasby (5-10), who averaged three points and three rebounds.
