COSTA MESA — Two thieves made away with nearly $400 in rare coins and jewelry during a robbery Saturday in a yogurt shop parking lot, police said.
The incident occurred about noon while the victim, an adult male, was inside the Golden Spoon yogurt shop on Harbor Boulevard. Two men broke into the victim’s car and attempted to steal a briefcase containing $4,800 in collectible coins, jewelry and currency, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Les Gogerty.
The victim, whose name was not released, ran out of the store to confront the thieves. After a brief struggle, the pair fled the scene in a 1970s-era yellow Chevrolet with some of the goods, although they left most of the valuables in the parking lot. They were still at large late Saturday, Gogerty said.
Police believe the thieves followed the victim to the yogurt store from a nearby appraisal shop.
