Suspect Arrested in Shooting of Sheriff’s Deputy

A Paramount man has been arrested in connection with the wounding of a deputy sheriff who was shot five times during a gun battle two days ago, police said Sunday.
Arthur Rodriguez, 28, was taken into custody about 10 p.m. Saturday, more than five hours after Deputy Robert Pavlik, 30, was wounded outside a home on Texaco Avenue in Paramount.
Sheriff’s deputies found Rodriguez at a house not far from where the shooting took place. They said he was carrying two pistols in his back pockets and had been wounded in the leg.
The search for the suspected gunman involved about 70 people, including deputies, a sheriff’s special weapons team, police dogs and South Gate police.
Pavlik, who has a wife and four children, was listed in stable condition Sunday after undergoing surgery at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Investigators said a bulletproof vest he was wearing probably saved his life.
