Harvard Ellman, 72, Los Angeles orthopedic surgeon known for his innovative techniques for treating shoulder injuries. Ellman applied arthroscopic surgery, first used in treating knee injuries, to shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff tears and instability of the joint. Shoulder arthroscopy enabled patients to recover from surgery much more quickly than with conventional or open surgery.
