Police Seeking Funds to Replace Retired K-9
The Laguna Beach Police Department has bid goodbye to Gero, a police service dog who retired from active duty after eight years on the force, and is seeking help from the community to hire his replacement.
The 10-year-old canine began his career in Laguna Beach in November 1988 at the age of 2. The German shepherd, who will continue to live with his handler, was the department’s first and only police service dog.
“He made a big, big difference,†Sgt. Mike Hall said.
During his tenure, Gero was involved in the seizure of more than $100,000 in cash and more than 20 pounds of narcotics.
Because of budget constraints, the Police Department does not have money to replace Gero and continue the K-9 program. Police officials are asking residents to help come up with the $12,000 needed to obtain a new dog and pay for officer and dog training.
