Marianas
Re “Marianas Could be Pivotal Again,†Commentary, Nov. 22:
It is a twofold fundamental error in military strategy for Milton Copulos and Andy Messing to suggest an American retreat to Saipan to prepare for a showdown with China in the 21st century.
During WWII, Japanese forces pushed into the Pacific not only from its mainland, but also from its colony, Taiwan. If there is a battle line against China to be drawn, it ought to be the Taiwan Strait, not the American Marianas.
Once China takes Taiwan, it can use it as a steppingstone to the jungles of the Pacific islands.
